Our Story
You know what’s great? Kickball. Remember swinging for the fences as a kid only to send the ball bouncing towards third and then dodging that big red ball? Lots of people in SF remember and joined teams to meet new people… and one of the people Nathan met along the way was Nick Dealtry… who had this great room mate named Julie.
Something else great? Mad Men. Really, it’s a great show. So great, in fact, that many folks have Mad Men themed birthday parties… and when a kickball team mate threw this now legendary party, Nick brought along Julie to meet the team.
Fast forward a few hours later and Julie and Nathan realized they both played soccer, both seemed to think the other was cute, and both seemed to be having a good time with the party and other folks there. And that was it…
Until a few months later when Julie and Nathan ran into each other again at Kell’s, an Irish bar that neither of them particularly liked but both had been drug to by other friends for that night.
Nathan struck up the conversation, “Hey, you’re Julie from the Mad Men party, right?” and followed with an invitation to join his very social, always up for a post-game drink, co-ed Sunday soccer team. Julie responds, “Sounds good, I have your number.” Not one to leave that invitation to chance, Nathan texted Julie before leaving the bar to make sure they were on for a Sunday game…
After that first game, Julie and Nathan headed to The Buena Vista for Irish Coffees. None of the team joined because, well… the team was not very social nor had never gone for post-game drinks. But… that didn’t stop Nathan and Julie from having a great conversation covering their histories of soccer, love of classic cars and comparing notes on favorite music. It didn't stop them from having a few great Irish Coffees, either. Nathan drove Julie home in Nigel, his classic right hand drive Mini, with The XX playing to cap the morning (yes, all this was on the second Sunday morning in February, 2011).
They both realized it was a great conversation. Better than great, unique. Something you hope happens again. Well… They kept talking, kept playing on that Sunday soccer team (which started to go out after games together more and more often), and those great conversations kept happening. On the field and off. On dates and with each others’ friends. In this country and abroad.
And eventually… a great conversation in Costa Rica, a few days after their two year anniversary, led to Julie saying yes to Nathan’s proposal. It being a beautiful sunset and standing 20 feet into the surf didn’t hurt, either… but something great must have been said along the way. However, don’t ask either to repeat the proposal or conversation leading up to it… neither remember anything but the yes part!
